parent management and FAMILY support in New York City
At PAC Psych, we provide Parent Management Training (PMT) for caregivers who are navigating persistent behavior challenges with their children up to age 14. In our Upper West Side practice, we help parents and caregivers learn practical, evidence-based strategies to reduce disruptive behavior, increase cooperation, and create a calmer home environment.
Our approach is collaborative, respectful, and grounded in research-backed methods that empower parents to respond to their child’s behavior with confidence, consistency, and care.

When Parent Management Training Can Help
Parent Management Training at PAC Psych may be a good fit if your child’s behavior is creating ongoing stress at home, at school, or in the community. Families often reach out when they notice frequent tantrums or meltdowns, constant power struggles, defiance or arguing, difficulty following directions, or challenges with routines such as homework, bedtime, or getting out the door.
PMT can be especially helpful when a child has symptoms of ADHD, oppositional behavior, or emotional dysregulation, or when traditional “talk therapy” alone has not led to the behavior changes you’re hoping to see. It is also a strong option when parents want tools they can use day-to-day, whether or not their child is ready to fully engage in therapy themselves.
Every family’s circumstances are unique, and part of our role is helping you sort out which patterns are most important to address and how changes in adult responses can support more positive behavior over time.
Our Approach to Parent Management Training
Every family brings its own values, culture, and challenges, so we don’t expect one strategy to work for everyone. We start with a thorough intake to understand your child’s behavior, your family structure, daily routines, and what you’ve already tried, then collaborate with you to define clear, realistic goals for change. From there, we introduce evidence-based strategies step by step so you can practice and refine them in real life.
Depending on your family’s needs, Parent Management Training may focus on helping you:
- Give clear, effective instructions and follow through consistently
- Use praise and positive attention to strengthen desired behaviors
- Create predictable routines and problem-solve around high-stress situations such as homework, sibling conflict, or transitions
We also work together on setting developmentally appropriate expectations and implementing fair, consistent consequences when needed. We check in regularly on what’s working, adjust the plan as needed, and always move at a pace that feels manageable.
The length of Parent Management Training varies depending on your goals and the complexity of your child’s behavior—some families benefit from a shorter, skills-focused series of sessions, while others choose ongoing support as they implement changes over time. Early in the process, we’ll talk with you about what to expect and revisit that plan together as you and your child progress.

Support for Parents and Caregivers
We understand that parenting a child with behavior challenges can be exhausting, isolating, and at times discouraging. In addition to teaching practical strategies, we make space for your feelings and experiences as a caregiver. Throughout Parent Management Training, we offer validation and support as you navigate difficult moments, help you reframe unhelpful self-blame, and highlight your strengths and progress.
You don’t have to manage this on your own—we’re here to partner with you, step by step.
What Happens in Parent Management Training Sessions?
Parent Management Training sessions are designed to give you concrete tools while also making space for your questions, frustrations, and hopes for your child and family.
In a typical course of treatment, you can expect:
Initial meetings
We begin by meeting with parents or caregivers to gather background information, understand your child’s behavior across settings, and learn about your parenting style, strengths, and concerns.
Ongoing sessions
You meet regularly with your clinician for coaching, problem-solving, and practice. Together, you’ll review specific situations from the past week, identify patterns in what is happening before and after challenging behaviors, and plan new ways to respond.
ChIld involvement
In some cases, we may incorporate sessions where you and your child are both present, allowing you to practice new skills in the moment with guidance and feedback from your clinician.
School and provider collaboration
With your permission, we can coordinate with teachers, school counselors, or other providers so that expectations and responses to behavior are more consistent across home and school.

Throughout Parent Management Training, we see you as the expert on your child. We bring clinical expertise and structure, and you bring deep knowledge of your family. We work together so that the strategies you learn feel realistic, respectful, and sustainable.
